If you can't build in minecraft, there are a few problems...
how to build: scroll through you hot bar (in the game) or press the number keys until you have a block "in your hand" and then right-click it on a nearby open block space.
Materials: some materials or blocks can't be placed on certain blocks, such as cactus can only be placed on sand, and sugarcane can only be placed on grass, dirt, or sand. these certain block placements go on and on.
Mouses: If you have an Apple mouse or Apple touch pad, you can't right-click (building click) it will never work. Logitech or other wireless mouses can adapt to iMacs and MacBooks automatically.
