In 1948, James Brunot bought the rights to manufacture the Scrabble game.

In 1952, Mr. Brunot sold the rights to a manufacturing game company called Selchow and Righter.

In 1986, Scrabble was sold to a company called Coleco. The company went bankrupt and Hasbro purchased Scrabble and the company's assets. In the United States and Canada, Hasbro manufactures and owns the Scrabble trademark. In the UK and everywhere else, outside of US and Canada, J.W. Spear & Sons PLC, a subsidiary of Mattel, manufactures and owns the Scrabble trademark.
