Juan is the Gym Leader of Sootopolis City's Gym, known officially as the Sootopolis Gym, in Pokémon Emerald. He replaced Wallace, his former student, who in Emerald was moved up to the position of Pokémon League Champion, replacing Steven. He gives the Rain Badge toTrainers who defeat him. He specializes in Water-type Pokémon.
In addition to being a Gym Leader, in the anime, Juan is also an accomplished Coordinator.
