Yugi Muto is a teenage boy that resides in Domino City. He is an expert in games, especially puzzle games. He is also the reincarnation of Pharaoh Atem.
When his grandfather, Solomon Muto, gives him an artifact from his expeditions, Yugi solves it into what is now known as the Millenium Puzzle. At the moment that the Puzzle was solved, Yugi awakened the spirit of an Ancient Egyptian pharaoh who would takeover Yugi's body when he needed help. As this was unknown at the time, the spirit was dubbed "Yami Yugi". Viewers often speculated him as Yugi's doppelganger.
Yami Yugi, himself, being the spirit of a pharaoh, had his memories erased at the time, including his name. In ancient Egypt, he was known as Pharaoh Atem. During his reign, the evil force, Zorc Necrophades, attacked the capital and proved seemingly unstoppable. As a last minute attempt, Pharaoh Atem sealed his own soul in the Millenium Puzzle and banished Zorc with this incantation. The Puzzle was shattered and laid to rest in his tomb, later to be found by Solomon Muto.
With Atem's soul sealed, the position of Pharaoh was given to his cousin, High Preist Seto, who vowed only to rule until Atem returned. To prevent Zorc from ever returning, Atem erased his own memories, as his name was the key to the incantation needed to banish Zorc.
In order to be finally put to rest, his soul needed to return to the afterlife. This required his modern day reincarnation, Yugi, to help him recover his memories. Throughout the series, they are seen to help and assist each other frequently and although they inhabit the same body, they are often seen as different people.
Their physical appearances are similar, but also vastly different. In the English dub of the anime, Yami Yugi's voice is much deeper and more masculine than Yugi's. He is also taller and his golden streaks of hair are extended into the black and red frill. He is also noted as being more confident and much too prideful. He is seen as being a person who can never lose, even if it costs him high consequences. During the first arc, he is also depicted as being more ruthless, although with good intentions, often severely punishing those that do wrong. This even goes to the point where Yugi is afraid to let his spirit out. Yami Yugi also sometimes wears his school uniform jacket as a sort of cape.
Yugi Muto has a softer, and higher voice. He is short for his age, having not fully developed. He is noted as being extremely kind and as being somewhat self-conscious. He is seen as a person who is always willing to put his friends before himeself. During the first arc, he is also depicted as being shy and quiet, albeit kind.
it turns yugi into YAMI YUGI when he duels or when he wants to
probably the very first episode where yugi/yami duels kaiba the first time or when he is dueling pegasus in the first episode near the end of it.
Goku is stronger in fight than yami but yami is stronger in dueling.
'Yugi' means 'game' and 'Oh' means 'King', so Yami Yugi, or 'Dark' Yugi, is making Little Yugi scream 'Game King!', kind of like how a werewolf howls when it transforms into a wolf.

No, Yami never sees Yugi again after the final episode when he goes into the afterlife after their duel.
