Sonic definitely. Popularity doesn't come just to games. Mario has good games that I even play but that's really it. Sonic has tons of merchandise, a best selling video game movie, a huge comic series, multiple tv shows, a popular soundtrack that got releases that aren't in games, and clothing and shoe deals with puma and other companies. Sonic may not have the greatest games, but they can't be that bad considering he's a mascot that's been around for 30 years. Just look up the sales for sonic forces. It may have bad reviews, but the sales will surprise you!

Both are famous, but sonic's games for the past 10 years have been called mediocre to barely acceptable by critics. 2D sonic was considered better than 3D Sonic. Mario isn't more famous. While the Mario series in general is more recognizable to the average person, Sonic as a character was slightly more popular than Mario as a character,in the 90's. And yes, obviously Sonic was much cooler as well.
