my answers is based on experience. the best pick for that is Charmander. first of all Bulbasaur's speed is low and grass types are weak offensive characters. grass types also are easy to attack even though they have high defense, using fire type, ice type, psychic and ground types can easily destroy them. then Bulbasaur's best attack is the solar beam. this attack is not that strong and it takes two turns to make the move. before it can unleash the beam, he can be attack by the enemy twice considering the speed. second is Squirtle. high defense but low attack plus not too much in speed. even with high defense, when attacked by a special attack you can easily lose. Charmander has average defense but speed and attack damage are high plus special moves of fire types are really strong even when used to a disadvantage type like rock and water. when Charmander evolves to Charizard, it becomes a fire type/flying type so it can learn fly. it can learn fire blast and flamethrower which are very effective attacks. it can also learn slash at level 34 that is very effective. because of the speed, it can kill an opponent flawlessly or if it doesn't knock down the opponent at 1 hit, it surely can cause big damage on the opponent. fire spin is effective that your enemy cannot cause you damage at numerous attacks you inflict. for me, in choosing which Pokemon to add in the line up, attack and speed are the most important stats you must look into. that's where the advantage lies.
