There were many reasons, but the biggest that I recall is that Germany had defeated France in 1870 in a war, and had claimed the two French territories: Alsace and Lorraine. The French had vowed that one day the would reclaim the lost provinces, at no matter what cost. If it claimed its revenge, it would also prove to the rest of the world that the French were still a force to be reckoned with.
In the 1930s, Britain was still recovering from WWI, and was undergoing a mild depression in the economy. Britain also faced the oncoming WWII, with a declaration from Germany that their forces would not back down, pulling Britain into the war.
There was one main reason. Back in the 1870's Prussia (now Germany) was at war with the French. Prussia succeeded and occupied most of France all the way to Paris. They drew back later but took over the two provinces of Lorraine and Alsace. The French wanted these back after their embarrassing defeat to the Prussians, but Germany didn't want to give it up. Their was also alliance obligations. The Austrians- Hungarians were wanting to create war with the Serbs. But the Serbs had an alliance with the Russians and French, while Germany had an alliance to Austria. Both would have to fight in event of war. So when war broke out these nations were obliged to fight. Finally, Germany wanted to increase it's size and expand to Africa where other European colonies had been formed. The Germans would try and take over these colonies also creating rising tensions, all resulting in the two going into the war.
The French helped the patriots because earlier, in the French and Indian war, France and Britain were enemies and fought over the American land. When the Patriots proved themselves in the fight at Yorktown, France took it as a chance to get back at Britain.
