It was set in a fictional town called Newtown, which was based upon Kirkby on the outskirts of Liverpool. The series debuted in '62, and ran for 16 years before ending in '78.

The original cast of "Z Cars" was comprised of the late Stratford Johns, Frank Windsor, James Ellis, Brian Blessed, the late Joseph Brady, Jeremy Kemp and the late Leonard Williams (who sadly died very suddenly during the series' first year). The series' famous haunting flutes and drums theme was based on a folk song called "Johnny Todd", and was arranged and performed by the (then) husband and wife team of Fritz Spiegl and Bridget Fry. Apparently Spiegl wished to achieve a sound akin to that produced by a typical Flute band on an Orange parade. This theme was never released commercially, however a cover version was released by the Johnny Keating Orchestra sometime later. During the sixties Everton F.C. adopted the theme for themselves and the team runs out to its familar strains at each home match.
