when you get to Ecruteak city and i don't think it matters if you beat the gym or not but you go left of the city and go to the cave, a man will pop out and bump you, then apologize and then give you the HM strength
~Everything is peachy keen, except for that you go right out of Ecruteak city instead of left. It is also true that you do not have to beat the gym leader morty.
You get strength from a hiker that comes running out of Mt. Mortar just to the right of Ecruteak City.
you go to morty's[gym leader] town there will be a cave with shadow claw near it then a man will come out and give it to you
When in Ecruteak City, go east towards Mahogany Town. Eventually, a hiker will bump into you, apologize, and give you the HM Strength as an apology.
