Here are the two ways of getting fish:

First Way To Get Fish What you have to do to get fish is go to the Pause Menu by pressing (+), then go to the Object Catalog. Once here, go to the miscellaneous section and in it are fish. You can choose from three different fish tanks. The first and cheapest one takes up only one tile, has very little fish, and will only give you limited types of seafood when you harvest the fish after you have bought it. The second tank takes up two tiles, and has a few more fish, but still limited seafood variety. The third aquarium takes up two tiles again, has lots of fish, and gives you every single type of seafood available, usually the best. If you have the money and the space, get the biggest and most expensive fish tank to get the most out of you seafood meals. Once you've bought and placed a fish tank, you have some responsibilities. These fish aren't for just staring at (though pets will sometimes sit and stare at the tank). You must feed these fish by walking up to them and pressing [Feed Fish], or else they won't produce any seafood. If you have hired a gardener, he will feed them for you, though he only comes once every week or so, so that may not be often enough, depending on the type of aquarium you have. Anyway, if you feed your fish on a regular basis, they will be healthy, and you'll get some scrumptious seafood from them. Walk up to the tank and press [Harvest Seafood] to get some edible fish including Trout, Lobster, Shark, Shrimp, and more. Seafood often gives you lots of energy and fills up your hunger motive quite nicely when cooked, though it can make your Sim sick if they do not cook it right. It will also lower the bladder motive a lot. Have fun with your home-aquarium!

Second Way To Get A Fish

The next and most uncommon way of getting fish is by going to the Town Square and visiting the Pet Emporium. Without upgrades, you can buy the Goldfish Bowl. If you have the space and the Pet Points, buy it, and it'll go straight into your Family Inventory. Take your family home, then press (+) to enter the Pause Menu. Then go to your Family Inventory, and hop over to the Other Objects section (I think it's this one, though it may be the Pet Supplies section). Here you will see your Goldfish Bowl. Go into the place mode for it, and place it anywhere. It has to be on some kind of table, though. Once you've placed it, you still have responsibilities, though not as many, and this one actually is for staring at. You must clean the bowl when it gets dirty, and feed the fish. The bowl will be a dark green when dirty. If the bowl stays dirty and you have a maid hired, she will clean it for you, though I don't think either her or the gardener will feed the little Goldfish for you. You cannot get seafood from this bowl, as it only contains one little fish. Enjoy your new decoration!
