There is no X and Y on the Wii remote. If you mean the Classic Controller, then those are used in games bought from the Wii Shop Channel, and the purposes vary.
The Wii classic control is based of the original SNES controller. It has 2 analog joysticks, a four-way directional navigation button and four action buttons A,B,X and Y, as well has the start, home and select buttons.

The 3DS has the same buttons as a DSi (A, B, X, Y, L, R, Select, Start, the + Control Pad, and the Power button), as well as a HOME button in the bottom-middle of the system, which has a similar function to the Wii's HOME button. And also an analog stick

If you want to throw forward hold the up button and press either X or Y(I'm pretty sure it's X). If you want to throw backwards do the same thing while holding the down button.
For the Wii set the bottle to B then press B. For GameCube set the bottle to X or Y then press X or Y.
