The NES was released in Japan in 1983 as the Family Computer, or Famicom. There was much skepticism about how well the Japanese console would do in the US, so they changed the Famicom to make it look more 'american'. The Preliminary testing was in New York, and Nintendo thought it was OK to release it to the nation in 1985. It was discontinued in North America in 1995, but was manufactured in Japan until 2003.
