There is currently no release date set for Beta 1.8. Mojang is hoping to get it done sometime near the end of this month. Notch and Jeb_ are still hard at work on it. However, 1.7.3 was just released as a bug fix patch for you to enjoy.
This question is very out of date. Beta 1.8 has been released for some time, now. The current version of minecraft is Release 1.2.5.
