When airbrushes were invented, which is well over one hundred years ago.

actually, cave men often blew paint through reids or hollowed out sticks and were, in a sense, the first airbrush artists. the modern day airbrush, which is the pen shaped airbrush we know today, was invented in 1918, I believe.

Can you use regular paint for airbrushing?

Regular paint can be used for airbrushing, but it often needs to be thinned to achieve the right consistency for the airbrush to function properly. Acrylic paints are generally the most suitable for airbrushing when diluted with an appropriate medium or water. Oil-based paints are not ideal due to their viscosity and drying time. What careers are related to airbrushing?

Very few. The computer has taken over most airbrushing and art too! General painting ... airbrushing comes in handy for making signs, stenciling serial and part numbers on equipment and vehicles, etc. Actually, quite a few careers are related to airbrushing. If you check out "Airbrush Action", "Airbrush Technique" and "Airbrush Artist" magazines (both online and in hard copy), you will learn that the uses of the airbrush are only limited by your imagination. Airbrushing t-shirts is big in big-city touristy areas like Miami, FL, for example. You can also airbrush wall murals, automobiles, helmets, nails, crafts (toys, knick-knacks, etc.), and apparently, even a face (for application of makeup). Airbrushing is also increasingly used in tanning salons. It appears that anything with a surface is fair game. I've seen articles about how to airbrush toilet seats, LP's and laptops, for example. Check out the above-mentioned magazines for more ideas and information on technique, tools, etc..and go for it! :)
