Thousands of years ago, the spirit of a pharaoh was sealed away in a mystical artifact known as the Millennium Puzzle. The puzzle remained hidden for all that time, until a man named Sugoroku Mutou (Solomon Moto) discovered it. The puzzle remained inside a golden box, in pieces, until one day, his grandson Yuugi Mutou solved it....
Upon solving the puzzle, Yuugi became the host to the spirit of the Pharaoh, who did not remember anything of his past, but seemed to possess some very unique "dark" powers, including the ability to repel monsters and cause people to see things that aren't there.
Together with his friends Anzu Mazaki (Téa Gardner), Katsuya Jounouchi (Joey Wheeler), and Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor), Yuugi duels against opponents using the modern card game Duel Monsters in order to find out the truth behind the Millennium Items and the spirit that is "Dark Yuugi," or the Nameless Pharaoh.
