The guilds protected the merchant and craft members from taxes, monopolies, and ensured quality affordable products among other things. They also helped by forming religious functions and schools and providing health care and protection. Eventually they were removed because they hindered innovation and free trade.
Also I feel World of War Craft has them because when I Google guild wow comes up a lot.
