How do you sew a hole?

It depends on how big the hole is. If it is a slit, turn the fabric inside out. Line up the two edges, making sure loose threads are on your side. After threading the needle, knotting the thread, begin slightly back from the left edge of the rip. Use a small running stitch, which means, put the needle in and out very close to each entry / exit point. Try to make all stitches of even length and tension--do not pull too tightly on the thread and keep the rip flat. At the end, extend one or two stitches past the ripped section. Then, insert the needle and bring it back up with a thread loop on your side. Put the needle through the loop, once, twice, three times and gently pull down toward fabric. Cut the thread leaving at least 2" inches. Separate the threads. Tie them to make a knot. If the hole is wider, so you cannot bring the 2 edges together, you will need to patch it.

How does a check spring on sewing machine work?

The purpose of the check spring is to maintain tension on the thread as the thread take up arm returns to the top of the stroke pulling the thread back out of the cloth. The take-up arm follows the needle. As the needle leaves the cloth, the friction between the thread and the cloth forms a loop that the hook inside the machine catches, pulls around the lower/bobbin thread forming the locked stitch. As the take up arm returns to the top of the stroke the thread between the tensioner and the take up arm becomes slack. The check spring pulls on this slack to keep the thread taut.Proper stitches can not be formed if the check spring is not set with sufficient "snap-back" or tension on the spring. Setting the "snap-back" is by feel. Adjust it from loose to tighter to get good stitches. It is a three way balance between the upper thread tensioner, the check spring and the bobbin tension.

What does the phrase thread the needle means?

The phrase generally means to find a path through two opposing views. It's often done by politicians who try to have their cake and eat it too. When you hear or read "thread the needle" it means take the end of the thread and push it through the hole in the needle. There are several different methods of threading the needle. You can find three here: http://needlepoint.about.com/od/toolsandsupplies/ss/needlepoint001.htmIn reference to "find a needle in a haystack" you increased precision to the point that you could not only find the needle, but you could thread it where it laid.In WWII a pilot had trouble finding his target much less when he did see it, for the bombardier to hit it, so we just mass bombed areas, often the only thing remaining in the town was the target. With improved navigation and bombing they were able to fly to a precise spot and drop a limited number of bombs. They were able to find the needle at 45,000 feet, and so to speak, thread it, or fly through it, or put a bomb down the stack (smoke stack).

How do you sew a button on pants?

The shank is a great button. It relieves stress from the garment and makes buttoning easier. I would place a small piece of fabric on the inside of the garment in the area that the button will be sewn. The weight of the garment and the button will determine the weight of the thread used. Take a stitch or two through the stablizing fabric on the inside of the garment, then bring the needle through to the surface of your main garment. I like to take one stitch there before I put the needle through the shank. Take three or four stitches or what you feel stablizes the shank and then put your needle through the main garment taking your final stitches on the inside of the garment in the piece of stablizer. This will give you excellent hold without so much stress on the front side of your blouse etc. Don't take more stitches than you need through the shank as it tends to look bulky. Good luck.

How do you load a front loading bobbin?

I'm assuming you're talking about winding a bobbin on a sewing machine? If so, there is a post similar to the one for thread (near it) that you put the empty bobbin on. Then you put your spool of thread where it goes on the machine. You wind your thread from the spool of thread to the bobbin (there's usually a little chart on your machine, but if not, the thread goes through a hook or two and then you wind it about 4 times around the bobbin (clockwise). In newer machines you then push the bobbin toward a holder type thing that is near it. This disengages the needle from going up and down and lets the machine wind the thread as you push the pedal. On older machines, you have to turn the handle of the machine toward you and it disengages the needle, allowing the bobbin to be filled when you press the pedal. Hope this helps! You could probably google your sewing machine name and how to thread a bobbin and maybe get a diagram.

Do you use one thread or three in needlepoint?

It depends on the type of thread you are using and the gauge of your canvas and the stitch. Obviously the thread must pass easily through the canvas but have sufficient bulk to cover the canvas without it showing through (or grinning). Grinning is more of a problem with white canvas than with antique (brown) or a colour printed canvas. For a typical mono canvas of 10-12 gauge when using tent stitch use one thread of tapestry wool or 3 threads of crewel wool. If using Persian yarn split it into 3 strands and use 2 at a time. For 14 or 16 gauge canvas use 2 strands of crewel wool or 1 strand of split Persian yarn. For 18 gauge or smaller use just 1 strand of crewel wool or split Persian yarn. For rugs on 8 gauge canvas, use Victorian cross stitch with one thread of tapestry wool or 3 threads of crewel wool. Or use tent stitch with two threads of tapestry wool or 6 threads of crewel wool. For more information see http://www.needlepoint-tapestry.org.UK.
