Some therian believe that therewere this animal in a past life where as other just feel more comfortable identifying as this animal. There are therian in just about every religion, and every race.

you cant become one- but certain people are born with a special bond/connection with a certain animal- and they can't choose what animal they have a connection with, a lot of therians find out they are one around the 'pre-teen' stage (11-15) or- they can find they are one by getting a shift or phantom shift- i you think you are one- out out into the wilderness or a place where you think your therio-type is and just do some quads and chill! and maybe if you defintily are one and maybe have a shift (a lot of therians don't get shifts) make some gear! and find other therians to play with! and remember please don't fake it!!! i really hope this heled!
