Piplup and Squirtle are both as good as each other, although in my opinion Squirtle is better. Piplup is Definitely a close comeback to Squirtle because at Empoleon it has two types which are a good combo, leaving less weaknesses and more strengths. Squirtle is better because it has a good attack and an awesome defence at Blastoise. Blastoise can also learn a move called shell bash or skull bash which is a two turn move increasing defence on the first turn and attacking on the second with 150 power.

There is no best starter. No matter what, 2 gym leaders/ elites can beat them. And they all get types added to them when they evolve. I think piplup is the easiest one to train. But turtwig is the hard one but when it is good, it is really powerful. I like chimchar because he is fast, If you choose chimchar as your starter. That is not bad because your rival picks piplup. When you guys battle, you can use fighting moves attack because prinplup and empoleon are half steel type. If you choose turtwig, your rival will choose chimchar, its not a bad choice either because you can use ground attacks because fighting is bad against ground. I dont want to keep typing about water. My hands are getting tired. Im bored.

What starter do you have? If you have Empoleon, you don't need me to answer this question. If you have Infernape, then your rival has Empoleon. If you have Torterra, then a trainer has Empoleon, somwhere on the way to Pastoria city. This is why it isn't a very good Idea to skip trainers!

What Pokemon is best to pick at the start of Pokemon platinum?
A chimchar would be good for speed and sp. attack. A piplup is good for defense. I chose piplup and evolved it into empoleon and at lvl 61, I beat Cyrus at Distortion World. At lvl 80, Empoleon ALONE beat the Elite 4 and half of Cynthia's Pokemon by using only 3 leppa berries (a value of $30 in the game). I beat the rest with a Giratina lvl. 60

Really, they all have good qualities. Chimchar has good attack, Piplup has good speed, and Turtwig has good defense. I chose Chimchar though, because Infernape (his last evolution ) is Fight/Fire. But Turtwig's final is Torterra which is Grass/Ground, and Piplup's final is Empoleon, which is Water/Steel, so really, it's your choice. But if you NEED an answer, I would say Chimchar.

So, when you become Empoleon, you learn Drill Peck, flying is good against grass, which is no long super effective against you! You are [I think] extremely good against elite 4, minus champ/psychic. I'd say its a great choice!
