Clash is essentially a status in debate....a situation where you have all or both sides of a given debate competing to win the same arguments and talking topically about the same things. Clash is a necessary part of a good debate, because if you are arguing about different topics, or have radically different definitions being used by different sides, it is difficult to flow and evaluate who has the best answers.

In layman's terms, having clash in debate means we are not talking about apples and Oranges, we are comparing apples to apples, and fighting over the same problem where the terms and situation is clearly understood.
