You can place messages on them and have a Pokemon hold them.
When you trade with somebody, they'll get both the Pokemon and the mail.
It's like giving messages with trading Pokemon.
That's a waste of time as you have to be so close to trade that you could tell them about it so that removes the effectivness of the mail although they do make good note takersIt's a very good point, it is pretty useless, but in the time it was nice to see.
I think it was just another way for Nintendo to show off new things in PKMN.
Yea that IS true The most Important reason for mail is So you know what it is. The trainers you meet and people you meet might give you mail or ask you to give someone else mail. So you can buy mail i's for no real reason though so It's pretty useless as previously stated~Gracygoo

Keep in mind that Nightmare was not a TM in the GBA Pokemon games. In Pokemon Gold, it was a TM, and the fat guy on Route 31 would give it to you if you delievered the Spearow holding mail that you get on Route 35. In ShinyGold, because Nightmare is not a TM, he gives you Snatch instead (you also need to remove the mail from the Spearow.)
