There is a red pipe blocking your path at the start of the game in the Pipe Yard. This gets broken at the time when Bowser gets shocked by the electric intruder...er...thingy's. This allows you to use it as a platform to gain access to the upper levels. But when you first go there you can only enter the purple pipe, which takes you two rooms east and one room south of where Bowser is currently knocked out. Go there to trigger an optional cutscene:)
