Bookshelf.
If you just moved on Sims 3 and you're talking about family inventory...:, First go into buy mode. Then, go all the way to the bottom and you'll see an opened box. Click on that and to your right, you'll see all of your books. Next, drag the books to the bookshelf and then you can hit the Live/Play button to start you game up. If you just bought a book and need help....: Pause your game so that time won't speed by. Then you will see a Sim sign( info about your Sim and their history and how many days they have until aging), two people standing side-by-side (relationships) a person at a desk (career), a hammer (skill), and then a backpack (inventory). Click on that. It will have all that you need. That is where food, books, and a laptop can be stored as well as toys and some other materials. Next, drag the books to you bookshelf. Then you can start playing and if you want you're Sim to read, click on the bookshelf and three options will come up. Open bookshelf, Read something, and Read....., click on read for a specific book, read something for a random book, and open bookshelf to see what you have or to put it in your inventory before leaving out. Hope I helped!:) Resource's: Personal Game Experience

The force acting on the bookshelf with books on top is the force of gravity pulling the books downward. This force is exerted on the bookshelf through the books and causes a downward pressure on the bookshelf. It is important to ensure that the bookshelf is sturdy enough to support the weight of the books to prevent it from collapsing.
You cannot remove books on the bookshelf without deleting them from the iPad. If you don't want them to show on your bookshelf, you can create a new collection (a new shelf, you can call it Read Books) and Move them there using the Edit function.
It depends on the size of the bookshelf, as well as the thickness of the books you want to put in it.
When someone sells a bookshelf, the books usually go back to the seller or are separately sold or donated. The new owner of the bookshelf may choose to keep the books or dispose of them in their own preferred manner.
