What the public sees carhops do is carry the tray out of the building, walk or skate it to your car, greet you, read out the order and total and hand over the food, make change, tell you to have a great day, and go back in the store.

In between orders the carhops are making your drinks (sometimes the drinks can get complex, like a raspberry, strawberry, pineapple, blue coconut cream slush that needs to be hand mixed - and even the simplest drink, a coke isn't just a matter of pushing a button, as the drink needs to be babysat or set aside as the fizz settles before being topped off); making the ice cream dishes (cutting bananas, spooning out strawberries); warming the hot fudge; hand mixing the shakes, malts, and blasts; setting up the foods bags with the condiments, mints, napkins and such; constructing the cardboard drink carriers; restocking cups, lids, all the drink ingredients (cherries, cream, m&ms, etc); cutting lemons and limes; brewing tea; constantly carrying heavy buckets of ice from the ice machine; cleaning up messes; refilling the ice cream machines, filling the slush mixes, cleaning the bathrooms; emptying the trash; cleaning the tables outside; cleaning the windows; cleaning the ordering stations, etc. Oh, also the carhops have to drop their money off regularly so they aren't carrying around too much, and they double check the food orders. I know I am forgetting a lot of the duties.

Don't forget to tip your carhop, as most of the time they make less than minimum wage. It's not a matter of just carrying your food to you, they do a lot more of that to make sure your order is just right before you see their smiling faces.
