The character Goku greatly resembles the monkey king(or Sunwukong) on many levels.

Lets start with the name. In Japanese the given name for the monkey king is Son Gokū. This is also the name of the main character in "Dragonball" but he is normally revered to as just Goku.

Secondly, let's look at the monkey king story. Monkey King: Journey To the West (written by Wu Chen-en) is one of the four great classic novels written during the Ming Dynasty.

In this story Sunwukong was born from a stone. He wanted to be like the immortals and be free from death. In this story he is shown as haveing great strength. He is able to lift his 13,500 jīn (8,100 kg or 17,881 lbs) staff with ease. Goku in "Dragonball" not only has great strength he (early in the series) welds a staff. Both staffs also possessed the ability to change size.

the monkey king Using clouds as a vehicle, he can travel 180,000 miles a single somersault. Goku (also early in the series) uses a cloud named nimbus to ride around on [just with less sumersaults].

Sunwukong learned all the magic tricks from a master Taoist. He could transform himself into seventy-two different images except human because he couldn't transform his tail, Goku on the other hand can only transform into a large monkey, possessing a tail in his normal "human" form.

Both, as far as character is concerned, are seen as playful and arrogant, although Sunwukong was more of a trickster.
