Yes, you can connect a PS3 to an HDTV by a component cable or an HDMI cable.
Your best bet is to buy an HDTV (if you haven't already) and then buy an HDMI cable, and also a component cable hookup for you in able to connect your Wii using the HDMI cable. Otherwise, USB cable won't do.
Plug it into your TV with the cable that came with it or if you have a HDTV buy a HDMI cable and plug that into your HDTV and PS3.. Plug the power in and turn it on. You should see it on your TV screen and if not turn your TV to the same input you plugged the PS3 into. Owners of the 720P HDTVs or those without HDMI can buy PS3 component cables with 5 color coded connections that use RCA plugs for the HDTV inputs. Both the HDTV 1080p and 720 HDTV owners can connect with the A/V cable that came with the PS3, but then it will be standard 480i from your PS3
The HDMI connection on the laptop is for the same purpose as the connection on the PS3. They are both used to connect and allow the device content to be shown on an HDTV
Most HDMI plugs on computers both PCs and Laptops are out plugs meant to connect the computer to a HDTV just like the plug on the back of PS3 is meant to do. This would mean that you couldn't but if like me you have input it would be possible if you know how to get it working. Isn't the easiest thing to do.
