There is not one specific task you should perform in travian, except having fun ;)
The ultimate goal (for most players) is to win the server, normally with your alliance (friends). At the end of each server there is and endgame in which you should capture one of the few special world wonder villages, and you should raise a building (Wonder of the World) to level 100. The first one to do that wins.
In the meantime you can build villages and troops to grow stronger. For more information see for example the wiki-page of travian
