The different symbols mean different types of energy used to power up pokemon moves for the game. You use these moves to defeat your opponents. So if a card shows two green symbols next to the move Razor Leaf, for example, you would put two green energy cards under the pokemon with the move. Then you may attack the opponent with that move. Sometimes there are more than one type of energy symbol next to a move. Generally it is white with a star, which is colorless, meaning you can put any other type of energy in place of that. So if Razor Leaf move cost one green energy and one white (or colorless) you could use two green energy cards or one green and one purple (which is psychic energy) to power up the move.
