Hour long version:
1. Game begins with eight players. In the first round, all eight players play and the round lasts for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Each subsequent round will be 10 seconds shorter and will have one fewer player (after each round, one player [the player voted the weakest link] is eliminated from the game, never to return).
2. The object of the game is for all of the players to answer eight consecutive questions correctly and to reach and bank a $125,000 target after the eighth correct answer. If at any point in the game, a player gives an incorrect answer (or no answer), the money in the chain is lost, and the team must start over at $0. However, if a player says "bank" before their question is asked, the money in the current chain is preserved (put into the prize fund that ultimately goes to the final winner who takes all of the money accumulated throughout the show). however, the team has to start over, but unlike with a wrong answer, money is not lost.
3. The round ends when either time expires or when $125,000 has been banked (by either one chain or a combination of chains). If the banked amount exceeds $125,000, the team only gets credit for the $125,000 and any extra money is simply discarded. At the end of each round, all players vote on who should be eliminated (the person whom they think is the weakest link). While the players are writing their votes, the backstage announcer reveals to the home audience who the strongest and weakest players were for that round.
After all votes are in, each player reveals who they think is the weakest link, and the player who got the most votes is eliminated regardless of whether or not they were the actual weakest link in that round. If there is a tie for the most votes, the strongest link gets to cast the tie-breaking vote. The strongest link can elect to vote off his/her original choice (if that person was involved in the tie) or can change his/her vote to another person involved in the tie for the most votes. Regardless, as a tie-breaking vote, the strongest link MUST choose one of the players that tied for the most votes.
4. The first round starts with the player in the farthest left position. Each subsequent round is started by the player who was the strongest link in the previous round. If the strongest link was voted off(eliminated), then the second-strongest link from the previous round starts the next round.
5. When there are only two players remaining, they play a double-value round prior to the final round. Any money banked in this round is doubled and added to the money accumulated from the previous rounds to determine the final prize.
6. In the final round, the same two players play head-to-head answering alternating questions, in a best-of-five format. The player who was the strongest link in the double-value round chooses who goes first. At the end of five questions, the player answering the most questions wins all of the money and the other player gets nothing. If one player gets so far ahead that the other player cannot catch up, the final round could end before the fifth question is reached. The host will warn the player if a situation occurs in the middle of the final round where the game can be won with a right answer or lost with a wrong answer. If the score is tied after five questions, the two players go to sudden death. In sudden death, both players will get a question in each round. As long as both players give correct (or incorrect) answers, they keep playing. The moment when one player gives a right answer and the other gives a wrong answer, the game ends and the player giving the last correct answer wins the game and the money. (See table below)
Sudden Death: Both player give correct/incorrect answers: Keep playing
Player 1 is correct, and Player 2 is wrong: Player 1 wins
Player 1 is wrong and Player 2 is correct: Player 2 wins.
30-minute version is the same as above EXCEPT
1. Only six players play
2. Top target in a round is $25,000
3. First round is 1 minute 45 seconds, each round thereafter is 15 seconds shorter than the previous round
4.There is no double-value round. When there are only two players left, they head to the final round. If the strongest link was voted off in the last regular round, the second-strongest link chooses who goes first. The final round is in a best-of-three format.
