Wheel of Fortune puzzles fall into a number of different categories that can and do change over time. This season's shows have all been aired and until the new season begins in September 2009 the current Monday through Friday shows will be chosen from already aired episodes from this Season. The categories are given as a clue to help the contestant in solving the puzzles. Some of the categories are EVENTS, OCCUPATIONS, PHASES, PLACES, THINGS, BEFORE AND AFTER, SAME NAME, LANDMARKS, FICTIONAL CHARACTERS TITLES, PEOPLE, PERSONS, PROPER NAMES, EVENT, RHYME TIME, AROUND THE HOUSE, FICTIONAL PLACE, FICTIONAL FAMILY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, COLLEGE LIFE, SLOGAN SHOW BIZ, FOOD & DRINK, ON THE MAP, LIVING THINGS, HEADLINES, FUN & GAMES, IN THE KITCHEN, AUTHOR & TITLE (title & author), BEST SELLER (may be in author/title format), CLASSIC TV, FAMILY, HUSBAND & WIFE, SONG & ARTIST (artist & song), ROCK ON (maybe be in artist/song format), SONG LYRICS, SONG TITLE, THE 60'S (any decade), PEOPLE MAGAZINE, and of course the singular or plural forms of the aforementioned categories. Their are also bonus categories that allow the solving contestant to win an additional prize and some are NEXT LINE PLEASE, WHAT ARE YOU MAKING, WHO IS IT, WHO ARE THEY, and WHO SAID THAT. The number of categories has changed over the years. The $3000 additional bonus puzzles categories of FILL IN THE BLANK, FILL IN THE NUMBER, MEGAWORD, and CLUE are some of those categories that were retired. Some of the regular categories that have also been retired are FOREIGN WORDS, FOREIGN PHASES, SLANG, NICKNAME, and SLOGAN Literature was not found to be a category and is not on the list although title and author and bestseller are, fill in the blank is a retired category
