In South America there are several tribal groups whose name is spelled with an X, using historic Spanish or Portuguese pronunciation. An example is the Xavante tribe of Brazil, where the X stands for the sound sh (so it's Sha-van-tay).

There is no Canadian or United States tribe whose name starts with the letter X, but in Mexico there are the Xixime and Ximpece; in Central America are the Xinca; in Colombia there are the Xiriguana; in Brazil the Xavante, Xerente and Xucuru. In most cases the x represents Spanish or Portuguese "sh".
