'Common Games' is a term used for games that two or more teams play against another team. In other words, if the Vikings and Eagles both played the 49ers in the regular season, that would be considered a 'common game'. When two or more teams tie for a playoff spot their records in common games are used as the third tie breaker after head-to-head competition and winning percentage within the conference (to break a tie for a wild card spot) or within the division (to break a tie to determine the division winner).
