Aside from your starter, get a Taillow. He has high speed, high attack, and can counter his own Rock-type and Ice-type weaknesses with Steel Wing (which you get very early in the game anyway). Flying-types have a lot of type coverage too, and he’s immune to Ghost-type and Ground-type moves. Unfortunately his dual Normal/Flying typing does negate the normally less effective Fighting-types, but his Flying-type moves and speed will cover that. He can also learn Endeavor so if he does get into a bind, he‘s capable of bringing his opponent down with him. Early on he knows Sand Attack and Growl so he can protect himself. Some Taillows are born tanks but he’s generally a glass canon that almost always strikes first. In addition he can learn Double Team and Aerial Ace naturally which means you can evade attacks, but your enemies cannot. Then he can learn HM Fly which is powerful in itself and by the time you get that HM, you don’t have to face highly evasive Pokémon nearly as much that late in the game, so you can replace Aerial Ace safely. On top of ALL THIS, he gain xp very fast.
You can catch Zigzagoon too but he’s better off an HM slave. Shroomisn evolves into Breloom which is a Grass/Fighting type and has the Effect Spore ability, which inflicts a status condition on an enemy upon physical contact. Sadly Breloom is weak to Psychic, Flying, Fire, Ice, Poison, and Fairy (in the newer games), so he can be hit pretty hard. Thankfully he hits hard back, and is one of the faster pokemon in the game, so make sure he strikes first and use Carbos on him when you can to raise his speed. Finally, let’s not sit on Marill. It’s a very underrated and underappreciated pokemon that people gloss over and don’t think twice about catching, but he evolves early and his evolution, Azumarill, is a tank with high HP. He’s a great shield when you’re trying to heal up your other pokemon. And once he learns Bubblebeam he’s capable of pulling some weight as a proper Water-type.
I still highly recommend Taillow though, since you can also catch the rest of these guys too. If you have Torchic as your starter, you’ll end up with a sweeping duo (but please, put a tanky pokemon on your team too so they remain protected).

To get a Totodile in FireRed you must trade it over from Emerald version. To get the Totodile in Emerald you must first complete the Hoenn PokeDex and you will be given a choice of three Pokemon: Totodile, Cindiquil and Chikorita.
In the safari zone, in the patch of grass closest to you when you first enter, there is about a 5% chance of encountering one.
