Mega Man X is set roughly a century after the classic Mega Man series, with a new setting, characters, and threats. The Protagonist is X (Mega Man X) the successor to Mega Man. (Note: X is NOT Mega Man from the future) He is an android that has emotions, and can choose his own destiny. Mega Man is strictly a robot.

In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man, known as Rockman in Japan, is presumed to have died or become inactive after the events of the original Mega Man series. The X series takes place many years later, featuring X as a new generation of robot who embodies the ideals of his predecessor. While Mega Man himself does not appear in the X series, his legacy lives on through X and the other Reploids.
