The Minecraft launcher needs to go online to download the game the first time you log in on any given computer. After that, you can play Minecraft on that computer without being connected to the Internet.Multiplayer won't work offline, though. If a new version of Minecraft is released, you must go online to download the update. You can still play the old version offline before you do this.

Minecraft is a great open platform game, and it is available to play as a demo for free online. Although most people choose to download the game, you can try out the Minecraft game as a demo. The downside to playing online is the limited features. Since Minecraft is not entirely free, most people will pay for the game and download it, to use all the cool and fun features.

When you register for Minecraft, you have a free account. You can play the free Classic online version. You can still download the Minecraft launcher, you just won't be able to play it without paying for it first. Once your account is premium you can log into the launcher (that you downloaded) and it will download the rest of the game.
