Yes, the Wii U is fully backward compatible with Wii games, Wii downloads, purchased WiiWare and Virtual Console games and has the Wii Menu built into it. However, Wii games cannot be controlled with the Wii U GamePad and will not be displayed in HD on the Wii U console. Also, GameCube Contollers will not work on the Wii U even if the Wii game allows the use of GameCube Contollers. There are GameCube Controller Adapters (Mayflash) that were created that the GameCube controller to function like the Wii Classic Controller, but is not an official product of Nintendo.

HDTV will be needed to play HD on games, but you don't need it, so it's a bit like the PS3. But you need a different wiring to connect HD to non HD.

no one knows when the 'Wii HD' or as meny people call it the 'Wii 2' is out. More details are expected to be released at E3 2011. the Wii HD is out possibly at spring or summer 2012. There is a Rumor that the Wii HD is being released in Japan at June 2012. for now no one knows but we will know later.
