Yes, Halo reach is the prequel to the halo series, it takes place a matter of weeks before halo 1 and tells the story of the Spartans fight against the Covenant invasion on the human military planet reach, the games story will inform any fan or player to the events leading up to Masterchiefs rise and descent to the pillar of autumn, the starting location of the first halo game and how the chief came to be the last living spartan.
It's a prequel to the 1rst Trilogy. It's not a prequel to Halo Wars.
