Technically Sonny's son did take over the business in the end;
Santino Corleone had four children with his wife Sandra,
Francesca Corleone (Born 1937)Kathryn Corleone (Born 1937)(Twins)Frank Corleone (Born 1940)Santino Jr. (Born 1945)
But he also had an illegitimate child, Vincent Mancini Corleone, with his mistress Lucy Mancini. Vincent was concieved before his death and born after he was shot up at the toll way.
...Now to go along with the story there is a lot of give and take. In the book after Sonny's death Sandra moved to Florida to live with her family. But the book also says that Lucy Mancini never had a child and was sent to live in Las Vegas as the Familie's guest.
So with two of his sons in Florida, way from the family business and Vincent rejoining his uncle Michael in hopes of progressing through the family business, naturally it was Vincent who would take over the family
