I am not sure, but I can guess. There are probably alot of Mario fans, but not very many do the research that is needed to know almost everything about the Mario series. Personally, I do my research every day, and I am called The Mario Fanatic at my school. This series is very interesting, although people think that if you know to much, it might spoil the fun. But it doesn't.
Why is Mario so fun?
Because he is in so many different types of games not only certain people like Mario games there fun for everyone who like video games. as ario is a new type of game, today, regular games include first person shooting and murdering, but mario is a game of skill, timing. and its a game you want to play over and over as it is unique. Many people say mario games are just about "jumping on mushrooms" but those are people who have not experianced a mario game and have just seen a trailer and such of the sort. :)
