Zelda is a girl, yes. The main character, link, is a boy. Zelda is the princess form the Legend of Zelda franchise and she gets the title of the games.
Because Zelda is the main part of the Nintendo series. I think that Nintendo didn't want people to not recognise the Zelda games by renaming them "The adventures of Link."
