This doesn't mean you have to kill 512 abyssal demons to finally get a whip; you may have to kill more or less. A ring of wealth slightly increases the drop rate, but this can be very significant with rarer drops, like draconic visages from certain types of dragons.

To get 'rare' drops on PvP you need to risk more expensive items and stay in the hot zones. The more you risk and the longer you stay in the hot zones the bigger the chance of getting a 'rare' drop. Although it can take some time.
