You can play Minecraft Classic for free in a browser, at the Minecraft webpage.
It's on the exact same page as the Minecraft downloadable, on the Minecraft/downloads page, Minecraft_Server.exe
After you download it, go to your downloads folder, and then drag it on to your desktop. You should now have a shortcut.

You can play Classic Minecraft from the Minecraft website, played in a browser. (Note though that everything you do online, downloads something to your system, ie, viewing a webpage downloads it to your cache, that's why it takes longer to view a 4MB pic than a 128kb one).
When you download an update for Minecraft it deletes the entire .minecraft directory and re-downloads it. This will wipe any mods or texture packs installed.
