There is NOT a certain amount of time for this to happen.
You just have to keep feeding eat and wait until it gets a bit hungry again then feed it some more.
Some people stand there and wait until it is fully grown and just keep feeding it but you can do whatever you are doing but keep food with you. When you first get it, it gets hungry very easily. The older it gets, the longer it can last without food.
I think they like to eat 'Raw Beef' or something.
NOTE: You MUST have your dog out and dropped so it follows you around. Nothing will happen if it is sitting in your bank or in your inventory.
