You have to take out the battery in the DSi. Do this by screwing the screws out.

It's orange charging light will turn off when finished.
They are both very good NintendoTM products and it just depends on what you are looking for. I don't think that there is a DSi charging "dock", and even if there is one, it would be impossible to play music with it. However, if you upload .m4a files onto an SD card, you can listen to music through the DSi's built-in speakers.
The DSi, and any other Nintendo handheld, will charge as long as it is plugged in and receiving power. The system does not have to be on to charge. The DSi can charge a dead battery to full in about 3 hours.
