When a monster attacks Reflect Bounder, the attacking player takes damage equal to his attacking monster's ATK. The defending player takes damage as normal. Reflect Bounder is then destroyed regardless of the damage calculation.

So imagine attacking it with Blue-Eyes White Dragon, ATK 3000. The attacking player will take 3000 damage from Reflect Bounder's effect. The defending player will take 1300 damage due to his monster battling with a stronger one. Reflect Bounder will be destroyed by battle.

Imagine attacking it with Sangan, ATK 1000. The attacking player will take 1000 damage from Reflect Bounder's effect, and then 700 battle damage due to attacking a stronger monster. Sangan will be destroyed by battle, and Reflect Bounder will be destroyed by its own effect.

If you attack a monster that has more ATK then reflect bounder does his effect activate causing direct damage to your opponent?

Reflect Bounder only ever deals direct damage with its effect when it itself is attacked. If Reflect Bounder is attacking, the direct damage effect does nothing.

How does damage calculation work whether a weaker or stronger monster attacks Reflect Bounder in Yu-Gi-Oh?

Stronger Monster vs Reflect Bounder.Player A - Dark Magician (2500 ATK)Player B - Reflect Bounder (1700 ATK)Dark Magician attacks Reflect Bounder. At the beginning of Damage Calculation, Player A is dealt 2500 damage. Damage is calculated, Player B takes 800 points of Battle Damage. Reflect Bounder is then destroyed by its own effect (it destroys itself before the time when 'destroyed by battle' monsters go to the graveyard).Weaker Monster vs Reflect Bounder.Player A - Shapesnatch (1200 ATK)Player B - Reflect Bounder (1700 ATK)Shapesnatch attacks Reflect Bounder. At the beginning of Damage Calculation, Player A is dealt 1200 damage. Damage is calculated, Player A takes 500 points of Battle Damage. Reflect Bounder is then destroyed by its own effect. Lastly Shapesnatch will be destroyed due to battling with a stronger monster, it will go to the graveyard.
