To wake him up in FireRed, LeafGreen..and all the original Kanto games you simply find the PokeFlute from somone on the bridge outside of Lavender Town. (Most likely a fisherman. They are nice fellows) Go to Snorlax and play said PokeFlute in front of it. It will get all O:< and wake up.
In HG/SS it's a little different.
Go to your Pokegear and go to the Radio Card. Search around on the top area of it until you find the PokeFlute channel. Go up to the Snorlax and Press A while playing the PokeFlute channel. Again, he will get all O:< and wake up. It is level 50 btw. Sometimes they have different abilities (mine has Thick Fat instead of the loafing around ability it usually has along with Slaking.) or they can be holding items (Leftovers! Yes!)

In crystal it is to the right of vermillion city, which is the place you arrive when you get off the S.S Anne. To get to it, you have to awaken the massive Pokemon blocking the way (Snorlax) by switching on your Pokegear and tuning it to 'Pokemon Sleep' or something like that. Then if you click on the Pokemon it will wake up and battle you. Then catch it or defeat it, and you will be able to get into diglett's cave.
