You can sync your controller into your xbox 360.To do that there are certain buttons on the controller and the xbox 360 you push to sync the controller.

Theres a little button on the 360 and the controller. Make sure you are holding both buttons when turning on the controller.
If the controller is wireless then you have to hold the sync button on the top of the controller in between the RB and LB buttons. The sync button has three curves right next to it. The Xbox 360 controller will not work on the Xbox one. You will have to use an Xbox One controller.
Your xbox controller may not be synced. To sync it: There should be a small button on the controller in between the left and right triggers just to the side of the Microsoft logo, it has a symbol like this next to it (((.
