The easiest thing to do if Sims 3 is crashing is to take it slow- don't run loads of other programs on you pc/mac/whatever at the same time, also, not clicking so much whilst you playing helps too. If Sims 3 does crash, just go back to your homepage, wait a minute, then try to go back on it. You could try deleting programs you don't need on your computer too.
