while in game? well you press escape and click save and quit to title if singleplayer or it will say disconnect if on multiplayer. that will bring you to the main menu where you click quit game EASY PEASY :D
minecraft (PC)- Hit [ESC] then at the bottom it says quit to main menu.

Minecraft (P.E.) Hit the [I I] then quit to main menu.

In December 2011, Notch stepped down from lead developer of Minecraft and gave the role to Jeb. The game was officially released on November 18th 2011 in Minecon 2011. The game is still worked on today, currently in the 1.7.2 update.
