The Nintendo 64 version on the game does not have any multiplayer mode.
The Nintendo DS remake does, however, have a VS. mode, which is a battle to collect and keep the most of five Stars.
To initiate this mode, select VS on the title screen. Once someone has joined you via DS Download Play, tap one of the four course pictures to select a course to play in.
Controls are the same as in the Adventure mode, except that any character can obtain wings from the ! blocks, not just Mario.
You can attack other players to make them drop Stars; however, Yoshi cannot attack Mario, Luigi or Wario except by ground-pounding.
